stockpiling

to heap up (ore, coal, etc.) in piles at the surface, to accumulate a stock of (something); spec. to build up a stock of (nuclear weapons).

2009
media: bbs and magnets
dimensions: 130 sq. ft.

‘Stockpiling’ is an installation whose walls are layered with 24 gauge steel plates, over 100,000 magnets, and more than one ton of bbs. Used for expressive rather than ballistic function, under these conditions the bb suggests a silencing, or muting, of an object normally associated with a singular violent burst. The stockpiling, hoarding, or colonizing of the bbs, while creating enormous opticality, symbolically and logistically counteracts the accumulation of ammunition used as weapons. My own accumulation of bbs create actual conditions of scarcity, and in fact, today, ammunition manufacturers cannot make enough to meet the existing demands in a post-911 era.
