'Labyrinths' are a series of works composed of steel, magnets, and iron filings. To create each work, I allowed the magnetized iron fillings to align themselves into patterns that evoke circuit boards, folds of the brain, velvet sheen, embroidery, pictographs, etc.
The brown labyrinths are made from corroded iron filings. The colored labyrinths are made from inspection powder. The color contributes a feeling of caution and artificiality to the seemingly organic pattern. This pigmented iron, is a found industrial material, an inspection powder, used to detect defects in the structural steel, automotive, petro-chemical, power generation and aerospace industries. It is also used for underwater inspection to test offshore structures and underwater pipelines.
